Recommend a decent budget quad gate ...

I club where I've been working at recently has no gates other than the
3) dbx 1066 Comp/Gates. I like them as comps, but not as gates. The
owner just bought the fully equipped club & is not likely to spend a
bunch of money on something like BSS gates.

I'd like to hear a few recommendations on decent "budget friendly" quad
gates. I want Attack Time, Release Time, Threshold & Ratio control. I've
used Behringeer in the past, but they don't seem to last long. They are
cheap enough to be replaced every year or two, but I'd like to recommend
a unit of better quality, but still with a decent price tag.

Any & all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Denny

The dbx is $529. the only price I found on a Mackie QUAD is $750.

Buy two of the Bee-ringers. There's no mic amp on 'em
to pop, so I bet they last.

I would recommend a pair of used Aphex 622 gates. You can now find
them used for less than $200 each and they're as good as or maybe
better than the Drawmer DS201. Back when they were new, they were
$1000 gates.

I just purchased an Aphex 622 on Ebay for $125 + $25 shipping. There are
a few more for $299-475 BUY NOW. I'm hoping I can get another one for a
decent price. Thanks for the suggestion. This is a nice unit with
sidechain filter (and headphone monitoring of that filter), plus
external sidechain.

I also bought a new Behringer quad gate from Sam Ash for $99, no tax or
shipping. I'll probably sell this to the club, but put the Aphex in the
club, as well. From my experience, the Behringers crap out in a year or
two & make audible noise when opening & closing. But at $99 they are
disposable.

Another thing I learned about Behringer (the hard way) is that the only
thing holding the pots in place is the solder joints. If you try to
remove the knobs to open them up, you break the freaking pots. Then they
are not even a doorstop because they are too lightweight.

FWIW - my Behr quad comp/gate (which I basically only use for the gates) has
held up for maybe four or five years now in my stage rig, so maybe a couple
of hundred shows. The last time I hooked it up for recording the gates
didn't make any unusual noises, but I was using them on drums so the levels
may have been high enough for me to not notice.

I'm not a fan of the compression circuitry, but the gates have been fine for
me. YMMV.

Furman  QN-44  ?
Absolute garbage! And no side chain filter. The Aphex is the way to go
for the prices they're going for now. It would be stupid to consider
anything else unless rack space is nil. In that case, best to spend
the money and get a quad BSS.

I owned an aphex quad logic assisted gate. I gave it away. The furman,
judging by the 2 on my shelf will last for many years which was the primary
interest.

I bought an Ahpex 622 dual gate for $125 = $25 shipping & handling. I
also bought a disposable quad Behringer gate for $99 - no tax or shipping.

I have always liked Aphex stuff. I've seen their 900 series gates &
comps in a number of studios. I own an Aphex Compellor leveler/comp. It
is the most natural sounding compressor I've ever used, but I stopped
taking it to the clubs that I worked at because guest engineers tended
to over-compress their mixes & having feedback problems - because they
didn't hear the less transparent compression they were used to with
lessor compressors.

No disrespect, Tim, but if you like the Fuhrman so much, why is it on
your shelf & not in your rack? And no disrespect, K, but in my original
post I clearly stated that it was very unlikely the club owner would
agree with spending the money for a BSS. He is completely happy with
buying the Behringer for $99.99. I also bought a quality 4 channel
insert snake for $24.99. I bought the Behringer & insert snake for what
the Behringer alone would have cost locally for the Behringer alone.

I use all dbx DDPs for "A" events

I use dbx 166 or 266 for direct sunlight events, or if someone requests
analog.

I have Behringer comp / compressors units for remote broadcast applications
and as loaner units.

I have dbx 266A's for stand alone mic pre/comp/gate/tone.

The Furmans I got used and cheap when I needed to do a talking head debate
for radio. They preceded my above acquisitions.
They are in the rack with a Fostex spring reverb and a couple of dbx 1bx
expanders and a dbx 463x gate.
