Discussion:
EV Stage 200 - replacement drivers required

Hi All,

I have a pair of EV S200's, and the drivers ( both HF and LF) are good but
sound a little jaded. I bought these second hand three years ago, and have
used them regularly since. I drive them hard but not into clipping.

Can anyone recommend a replacement driver set? I'm led to believe that EV
"just don't do them anymore". They're hard to find alternatives due to the
shallow basket profile.

I'm in the UK.

Many thanks for any help.

Take or send them to Wembley Loudspeakers for reconing. Don`t ruin them
by trying to fit different drivers.

Just thought - that might be a little obscure for many, Paul McAllum the MD
at Wembley Loudspeaker was the bass guitarist for The Wombles when they did
live gigs :)

Jeff Clennell (last heard of at Villa Audio in Chelmsford) was known as the
Orinoco Kid for similar reasons !!!

Hey, My mate Jim was the drummer - his claim to fame is that he did Top

Jaded may be slightly the wrong word to use, but they're not quite as bright
sounding as they were. I think the HF drivers are getting a little tired! I
have thought it may be my hearing, but I don't think so. ;-)

I've been in touch with shuttlesound - they offered to re-cone the LF
drivers, but didn't mention anything in their email about the HF units.

Cheers,

Ring Shuttlesound and ask for service/parts, they will tell you what
replacement drivers are used in those boxes. You can order over the phone or
if they are priced over your reach (most people who ring them have trade
accounts) find a dealer who will do you a deal once you have the part No.

Tricky to comment.

Have you checked the crossover networks ? If they contain any electrolytic caps
(bi-polar) I'd check those out.

Sure, I'd expect Shuttlesound to offer a recone. They're good guys btw - I've
found them to be very helpful but I doubt that's your actual problem.

As for the HF driver all you can do is fit a new diaphragm but I seriously doubt
that's the issue.

Mail me on my hotmail addy that I give out here.

I'll do my best to fix it.

Do the S200`s have the polyswitches in the feed to the hf unit like the
sx`s do? if so, they may have gone open circuit.

EV also use incandescent bulb limiters.

I've had to replace those too. They *do* burn out sometimes.

I recently had to rebuild a pair of S200..

No electrolytics ( film caps instead ), no bulbs, no polyswitches...

I got a diaphragm for the tweeter from the EV rep here, but it does take a
bit more skill to install than a regular comp. driver diaphragm..

This is what you need to install ( this is the damaged diaphragm ):

Let me know if your local EV people cant get the part for you..

Woofer is EVM12S afaik..

As Graham mentioned you'll want to check the crossover networks, and
maybe check for dust or other contaminants in the HF driver gap and the
passageways between the diaphragm and the horn. I've seen accumulated
dust so thick in the gap that it was difficult to pull the diaphragm off
the magnet but after a good cleaning all worked as well as new, from a
driver that spent a good bit of time in a smoky club. We also found we
needed to clean most of our HF drivers after a four day festival in a
dusty rodeo arena after noticing we had the HF drive up about 4-5 dB
from where we usually set it. Too many dancers, a bit of a breeze into
the stage and hot, dry weather. I was glad I was at FOH and not
monitors (ahhh- CHOO!).

The hf units in the s200 is a dome tweeter, not a horn so it probably does
sound jaded compared to a proper horn driver like the one in the sx range.
