Discussion:
19" rack mount USB hard drive?
(too old to reply)

Hi,

I'm trying to get one of these for a colleague:

http://www.numark.com/dds80

Unfortunately they are discontinued, though you can buy the controller (DDS)
on its own.

So, anyone know of a source for reasonably priced 19" USB rack mounts that
will take hard drives, and hopefully a CD reader?

I am in the UK.

Cheers,

Gareth.

Get a rack mount shelf and attach what you need to it?

No thanks, that's not really what I want to do at all.

Well it looks like this is the only solution! Not very pro, but there you
go.

Problem is that the Controller, Hard Drive and CDROM will be removed from
the rack after each use, to be taken home to have new tracks ripped in/old
ones deleted.

I'm just trying to imagine all the USB cables/hub and PSU spaghetti
involved.

Thanks Arny.

So then, wouldn´t it be more convenient to split the existing rack (assuming
there is one) up into 2 smaller ones?
Put controller, HDD and CD drive into one rack and leave it cabled together,
just connecting the power amps (in another rack?) when necessary...
IMHO that would be a lot less hassle with all the cabling "spaghetti" in the
long run.

Just a thought,

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, this is not practical in this
instance.

I did a little research before I posted, and came up with the same
conclusion.

You can minimize the spaghetti by putting a USB hub and a short power strip
on the shelf. Then the in/out cables are minimized.

Will the CD-ROM and controller be used at the gig? If not then there's no
need to take them with you and they can be left at home.

A single or double unit loaded with hard drive(s) in a rack-bag with a USB
cable to link the unit to whichever work environment you're at

I know that there are many models of rack unit designed to accept HDs, but
most are for man (many, many) multiples thereof, so it would probable be
best to buy an external drive (I just picked up a Seagate 2TB at Maplin for
karaoke use for £99) and mount that to the rack with the wall-wart fixed in
there as well and linked to an IEC socket.

cheers

Not quite the same, but I'm currently using this Pioneer's MEP7000
http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/44/106/462/MEP-7000/index.html with a
320GB drive plugged into the back and whetever I want plugged intot he
front - I use their DJM5000 mixer with it
http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/44/74/461/DJM-5000/index.html which lets
me control the computer (with 8TB on board) remotely.

The Numark can rip CD's to WAV onto hard drive - no need for a computer at
all.
This is for someone who's not very good at computers!

Might have a solution here - I have a scrap twin CD player here (2U
rackmount). I could probably bodge in an external CD ROM (with an eject
button on the front drawer) on one side, and mount an external hard drive on
the other side. The rack has a figure 8 mains connector so just add one of
these,

http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-panel-mount-socket-219901

and an internal powered hub, the PSU's for the three units, and Bobs yer
Uncle. My single box solution.

Many of the players in commercial DJ units are computer cd-rom drives, so
that should ot be a great problem. With 8 separate bolt doles to choose
from to mount the HD that shouldn't be a problem either.

You'll need +5V and +12V for the HD tho.

That looks like a Neutrik so it's a good price, normally that's cost + p&p

£2.25 here but not so good-looking
