Last night I was working on a children's choir. Must of the stuff was
piano backed but three songs were sung to cd tracks.

I cued up the first track (23) on the cd and on the cue pressed play.
The conductor shook her head at me and said it was the wrong track. I
looked at the display and sure enough it was track 23 playing an upbeat
bouncy number.
She scratched the song and went on with the programme.

Later in the interval, we tested the cd player again and sure enough it
played the correct track 23 - a quiet piano tune, and behaved itself for
the rest of the show.

Has anyone else had this happen, correct track number showing on the
display but wrong track playing? I didn't think it could happen, but I'm
positive track 23 was on the display while track 15 played...

Insist on the cd being available for ripping and use a *suitable* playback
implement, whatever that mote be in your opinion. Ripping in Feurio and
playback from Feurio via legacy lappie works fine for me. Had to use
cd-player in Vista lappie and Windows Media Player due to no advance warning
on dayjob x-mas party yesterday, not fun.

The cd was an original, the player a fairly new TEAC which has never
thrown up any problems before.

** Yep.

I didn't think it could happen,

** The display will always show the track number you selected, then the
machine tries to find that track. If data on the CD is corrupted by dirt,
scratches or fingerprints it is possible for the wrong track to be played.

In critical situations, you need to cue the track and play enough to verify
it is the right one.

From my point of view, both the performer & venue must have backup
plans. When I have a crucial situation, I use my laptop to run audio.
