I'd like some opinions on this video:

Have you ever seen a whole orchestra wearing headphones?

Pity these "musicians" aren't capable of learning a 7 minute pop song, and
have to rely on sheet music to tell them what and when to play.

;)

Not necessarily, but possibly a bad habit.

Incidentally, I didn't hear anything pre-recorded, so presumably the
headphones were just a click track.

Not sure why that would be necessary, unless as well as requiring sheet
music, they also can't keep time very well.

They seem very spread out, as you say Gareth, maybe a click track or
perhaps it's just so they don't have to listen to Mr Gabriel ;)

Still can't quite see the need for the orchestra having a click track or
anything else though - the conductor is there to cue and keep everyone in
time, as conductors have been doing for centuries now. Both he and Mr.
Gabriel have in-ears, and Mr. Gabriel also has a visual metronome and a TV
monitor showing the conductor, at his feet.

Maybe it just looks good on TV.

Ah, it seems the tour used an Aviom monitor system.

Perhaps they are not paid for devoting that much time to it or not even
given that time, but rather arrive on the set without ever having seen the
note-sheets they are to play.

Perhaps they are local union musicians .., but I doubt it ... I could be
wrong.

Actually, it is not that complicated, given the situation, I've worked a
few shows with Adrian Belew. His band used the same kind of mon9toring
system. If the monitor can send out 16 discrete monitor channels - or
sub-mixes - the individual stations can adjust those 16 channels in
their ears as they like.

This would be heaven for a monitor engineer feeding 60 musicians. Not
only that, but responsibility (or blame) would clearly fall on the
section leaders of the orchestra. There are only so many mics, & they
are distributed to pick up primarily principal (the best) players.

I love this concept .... if true .....
